RS Electrical was appointed directly by Belt Road Working Men's Club in Hednesford, Cannock, to undertake a comprehensive rewire and wider building services upgrade.
The project followed an Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out by another contractor, which identified extensive issues throughout the existing electrical installation. Given the extent of the defects identified, completing individual repairs and remedial works was not considered the most cost-effective long-term solution, so a comprehensive rewire was undertaken to provide the club with a modern, reliable and compliant electrical installation.
Alongside the electrical works, RS Electrical coordinated specialist air conditioning works, giving the client a single point of contact for the wider electrical and mechanical package.
The club needed to remain operational throughout the project. Working closely with the client and club members, our team planned the works in stages to maintain electrical services wherever possible and minimise disruption to the day-to-day running of the venue. The full programme was completed in around four weeks, on time and within budget, with the club remaining open throughout.

Working in a live, operational venue
The existing installation had developed extensive issues, identified during an EICR carried out before RS Electrical's appointment. Given the scale of the remedial work required, a full rewire represented a more practical and cost-effective long-term solution than a series of individual repairs.
Belt Road Working Men's Club is an operational venue with function spaces, bars, a cellar and refrigeration equipment, kitchens, toilets, entertainment areas and other facilities in everyday use. Closing the building for the duration of the electrical works was not a realistic option, so our team worked closely with the client and club members to phase the installation, coordinate isolations and maintain electrical services wherever reasonably practicable.
Some ceiling areas within the building contained known asbestos-containing materials. Rather than carrying out work that would disturb the affected ceiling fabric, the installation methodology was adapted accordingly — for example, converting existing lighting to LED in place rather than removing and replacing fittings where that wasn't necessary. Good housekeeping was maintained throughout, with working areas left clean and tidy at the end of each shift.
The rewire and wider upgrade
A new Schneider Electric Acti9 three-phase distribution board was installed to provide modern circuit protection for the renewed installation, with individual RCBO and Type 2 surge protection across the new circuits. Associated mains cabling, earthing and electrical infrastructure were upgraded where required.
The electrical installation was comprehensively renewed across the premises, including new socket outlets, lighting circuits, dedicated supplies, ventilation supplies and emergency lighting. Dedicated supplies were installed for equipment including tills, refrigeration, water heating, hand dryers, ventilation and air conditioning, and the accessible toilet alarm was incorporated into the works and linked back to the bar area.
Older lighting throughout the venue was replaced or converted to LED, including battens, panels, spotlights, wall lighting, emergency lighting, signage lighting and external floodlighting — improving lighting performance while reducing energy consumption and future maintenance requirements.
RS Electrical also acted as the client's main point of contact for the associated air conditioning works. Working with our approved specialist subcontractors, existing equipment was decommissioned where required and new Daikin systems were installed serving the pool room and darts room. We coordinated these works as part of the overall programme and completed the associated electrical infrastructure, including dedicated supplies and local isolation — giving the client a single point of contact rather than having to coordinate separate electrical and mechanical contractors.
External electrical services were also upgraded as part of the same programme, including signage lighting, emergency wall lighting, LED floodlighting, and electrical supplies and isolation for the external air conditioning equipment.
Following completion, RS Electrical carried out inspection and testing of the new installation and provided the Electrical Installation Certificate, along with the relevant commissioning and handover information for the air conditioning installation.
Completed on time, on budget, without closing the venue
The complete electrical and M&E programme was delivered in around four weeks. Despite the extent of the rewire, Belt Road Working Men's Club remained operational throughout — through phased working and close communication with the client and club members, RS Electrical carried out a substantial upgrade while keeping disruption to the venue to a minimum.
The project was completed on time, within budget, and while the club remained open and trading.
The result is a comprehensively upgraded electrical installation, including modern distribution equipment, LED lighting, emergency lighting, dedicated power supplies, upgraded external electrical services and new air conditioning systems.
